I'm at the end of my 2-year contract with AT&T. I've had AT&T forever, starting when it was GTE then Cingular. I don't have any particular beef with the company, coverage and quality have been fine, but now is the time to switch if it makes sense. I'm currently paying about $150/month for two phones and 2GB of data. I can get two new iPhone 5Cs for dirt cheap from Best Buy ($99 for a 32G model), but I don't have to stick with AT&T. What is Oppo's experience with other carriers?

I have AT&T and I hate them. I've had them since 2007 and they keep messing things up. Coverage is okay, especially now, but many times, my phone and my friend's AT&T phones will have full signal but no data. AT&T also screws up billing a lot. I'm switching to Verizon this fall when the new iPhone is announced.

Save $. Keep your current phone, unlock it (AT&T will do that for you) and go with a cheap pre-paid provider.

Not a bad idea, but my wife really needs a new phone, and we're keeping our old phones so our kids can play games on them. I suppose I could still have them unlocked, then my older son could use it as a phone when he gets old enough to need one, which won't be that long from now.

I'm in a similar situation to you except I've been with Verizon since the beginning. I'm tired of the data cap so I'm probably going to go with Sprint (would go T Mobile but they dont have service here).
If the latest and greatest phone isn't a big deal then maybe check out these guys. (They "rent" service to use from Sprint)

AT&T and Verizon are pretty much the only two worth having. Sprint can be decent, but definitely a tier lower. I have AT&T on my company iPad and Verizon on my personal phone, switched from Sprint a few years ago - still happy to have a phone that works well outside major urban areas.

We've had Verizon forever and have Galaxy S4s now with unlimited data. We had to be very clever about keeping the data bit! The fact that the S4 is a world phone makes it much more worthwhile than our old Droid Xs. Good domestic coverage on VZ, customer service has always been easy to deal with. Prices are what they are.
For work I have an IPhone 5 through ATT. Coverage has been almost as good as VZ. As it is a work phone, and doing what I do, I have all the international data and stuff turned on.

I use Straight Talk. $45/month for unlimited talk, text, and 3GB 3G data. Straight Talk gives you the option of using either AT&T or T-Mobile's networks. When you buy the SIM card you pick which network you want to use, so if you're happy with AT&T's coverage in your area, you can stick with a known quantity.
You do have to buy the phone outright, which can be expensive if you want a boutique phone like an iPhone or a Samsung Galaxy, but if you shop around, you can get a well-appointed unlocked smartphone for $200 or so. Check out the Google Play Edition of the Moto G.

If you're happy with the coverage you get on AT&T then I would switch to either Straight Talk or Cricket. Both are prepaid and use AT&T's network. With either of them you get much more reasonably priced plans with a bit more generous data caps.
The best route with either of them is to supply your own phone and then get a SIM card. I did this for my gf. I helped her buy a used phone on ebay and port her number to Straight Talk. She pays $45/month for unlimited talk & text + 3 GB data. If she goes over the data cap, there's no overage fee, the speed just gets throttled down.
So even if you spend a good chunk more money up front on phones than if you signed up for a new contract, you're going to save $60/month on the service which will quickly make up the difference.

I had AT&T with unlimited plan for a long time, but I switched to t-mobile recently for a better rate. I pay 60/mo for unlimited talk, text, and data; coverage is good in populated areas.
